about

Perhaps Mosaic’s biggest accomplishment is its successful marriage of conceptual depth with a radio-friendly melodic sensibility. Written by Hayes in early 2018, Mosaic is a duet that features the soulful vocal stylings of Grace McMahon (The Art Crimes Band) and explores themes of parenthood, mortality and cosmic interconnectedness through the medium of a father/daughter conversation.

Mosaic starts out as a lullaby that depicts a young father questioning his ability to do right by his new-born daughter as he grapples with the enormity of his newly acquired role. What if life is nothing more than a series of broken promises? The song’s dreamlike non-linear temporal quality becomes apparent as the narrative unfolds, with the listener catapulted to another place in time with the onset of the second verse. Here, the man’s now adult daughter offers consolation to her elderly parent in a reversal of caregiver roles that denotes a future lifecycle transition. In the end, both agree that life is what you make it; that life is a mosaic of the memories we make. The story concludes with a cosmic crescendo of celestial sounds as father and daughter contend with the impermanence of material existence as they step forth into the great unknown.

lyrics

When the truth is hard to take
And the night keeps you awake
Oh it’s easy to forget
That the hour is getting late
You don’t bury it inside
Until there’s nowhere else to hide
What if our lives are a mosaic
Of the promises we break?
I think so....

When the clouds obscure the sun
And the whole world’s come undone
Oh it’s easy to forget
That you’re not the only one
You don’t have to force a smile
Just come and sit with me a while
I think our lives are a mosaic
Of the memories we make
I think so.....
